Earls Path in Loughton, c1900 is a quiet rural path.
As with many paths through Epping Forest, some became very popular and over time, became roads.
Each parish had to maintain its own roads, and a good source of road material came from the digging of gravel pits.
These pits soon flooded and became natural-looking forest ponds.
