REDBRIDGE: Crime pilot to be rolled out

9:23am Thursday 3rd July 2008

A SUCCESSFUL crime initiative piloted in Redbridge will be rolled out across other London boroughs.

The Redbridge Retail Theft Initiative, that seeks to prevent first-time shop lifters reoffending, works with the council's youth crime prevention team Mpower, the police and traders in order to educate offenders on the impacts of their actions.

Out of 69 people who took the initiative between 2006 and 2007, just three reoffended.

The scheme deals with non violent theft of goods under £200, with offenders who refuse to take part prosecuted for shop lifting and those who do take part will receive a reprimand which stays on their record for five years.
